HALOGEN-FREE MATERIALS

A safe and environmentally friendly alternative to plastics containing elements from the so-called halogen group (chlorine, fluorine, iodine and bromine). They do not have a uniform nomenclature. Depending on the region, manufacturer preference or regulatory requirements, they are labelled, for example

  • HFFR – Halogen free, flame retardant
  • LSZH – Low smoke, zero halogen (LS0H)
  • LSHF – Low smoke, halogen free
  • FRNC – Fire retardant, non corrosive

These designations refer to selected characteristics that distinguish these compounds from halogen materials, and in particular emphasise flame retardant (FR), low smoke (LS), halogen free (ZH) and non-corrosive gases (NC).

Halogen-free materials, such as the most common PVC used in the cable industry, contain, among other things, a considerable amount of chlorine. The toxic hydrogen chloride produced during combustion is a considerable threat to life and health, and when combined with water, even in the air, it forms hydrochloric acid with extremely corrosive properties, which often leads to permanent and irreparable damage
to buildings and installations. These phenomena are accompanied by the release of large quantities of thick, suffocating smoke, which makes firefighting difficult.

In view of these hazards, the elimination of halogens in cables has become a priority in many countries around the world, resulting in the development and implementation of completely new halogen-free compounds that meet cable standards in a safe and environmentally friendly manner. During combustion, they produce water vapour, which, by hindering the access of oxygen to the material, slows down the spread of flames.
These advantages are particularly important in buildings and confined spaces with high occupancy (e.g. train stations, airports, theatres, hotels, office buildings, shopping malls), hence current legislation mandates that only halogen-free cabling be used in these areas.

The detailed technical specification of the wires, including tables on available cross-sections and their parameters such as approximate cable diameter, weight, nominal insulation thickness, and conductor resistance, can be found in the PDF datasheet of H05Z1Z1-F; H05Z1Z1H2-F cable

All technical data provided in the cable datasheet and on this page are for informational purposes only and may change without prior notice. They do not constitute an complete list of possible cable variations. We are eager to develop and manufacture additional constructions listed in the standards, as well as custom versions upon request.

Technical details and the offer may change according to market needs and the requirements of applicable standards.
